Welshpool steps up its tourism drive

As the area braces itself for the annual Easter invasion, Welshpool’s bid to bring more tourists and visitors to the town this summer has stepped up another notch.

The Tourist Information Centre (TIC) is set to be rebranded Visit Welshpool, offering more services and it will be backed up by a new web site promoting the town’s facilities.

It follows a year of increased activity which included incentives to bring the coaches into the town on their way to and from the coast as well as promotional leaflets which have been printed and distributed by the thousands.

“The TIC is an important service for the town and now offers an area for children to play in,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “It will also have a name change to make its role clearer. It is important to keep reviewing it to ensure it meets the needs of visitors to the town who can benefit from free toilets, wi-fi, information, children’s area, refreshments and a lot more.”

The area will be further enhanced by a new £25,000 sculpture which should be finished by the summer. It has also had a new ‘Welcome to Welshpool’ sculpture erected outside this winter along with flagpoles.

Meanwhile, the town is hoping for decent weather this weekend after last year’s bumper Bank Holiday was virtually written off due to the freak storms. Thousands of cars have already started making their way towards the coast and local businesses hope that many will be attracted into the town to boost their coffers.
