Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a Lively auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday.
OTMS (35)
With a reduced entry of 35 OTM, we saw an average of 123.29 pp/kg and 129.96 pp/kg for the younger cows. Topping the section, and receiving the Briarwood Products LTD prize of £25, was a Limousin weighing 841kg, from J H Breeze, South Moelygarth, making £1303.55. A British Blue from EH & EW Anwyl. Rhosgoch, made £1110.86 weighing 829 kg. A 48 to 72 months British Blue cow weighing 729kg making £1042.47 from TE & ME Morgan, Neuaddwen. Toppin the heifers under 48 months was a MRI weighing 732kg making £1010.16.
PRIME CATTLE
An entry of 2 prime cattle again this week saw an overall average of 243.9 pp/kg.G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach, presented two Limousin Heifers weighing 551kg and 573kg making 249 pp/kg and 239 pp/kg respectively. Mr Bound receives the Briarwood Products LTD Limited prize of £25 for highest price on the day.
PRIME LAMBS (5361)
With a similar entry to last week of 5361 prime lambs saw an average of 162.47pp/kg.
Lights (512) to 172p/kg from L M Etheridge, Penfoel & R Jones & Sons, Dolwar Fach. Others to 171 pp/kg from T & B Williams, Cilmawr. Average of 159.67 pp/kg.
Standards (1415) to 200 pp/kg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 192pp/kg from NG & GG Davies, Trawsgelli. Average of 158.94pp/kg.
Mediums (2295) to 198pp/kg and from Bowen & Bowen Penthryn & Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 193pp/kg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp.. Average of 164.76pp/kg.
Heavies (1043) to 182pp/kg from T & B Williams, Cilmawr & Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 181 pp/kg from DB & EFJ Gethin, Dolyrheol. Average of 162.64 pp/kg.
Over Weights (47) to 173 pp/kg from R M Evans, New House.. Others to 172 pp/kg from A E Casewell, Bodynfoel. Average of 157.01 pp/kg.
CULL EWE (3285)
A slightly small entry of 3285 cull resulted in averages of £48.36 for the ewes and £83.41 for the rams. Top price achieved for the ewes was achieved for a pen of 5 strong Texel ewes presented by Red House Farm, Aberhafesp, making £124. Closely following behind for a pen of 3 making £122 from CE Pryce, Yr Helyg. Cull rams topped at £142 for a single ram from W Jones, Glascoed. B L Griffiths also presented a single ram making £141.
Weekly sale of cull sheep to follow immediately after the sale of prime lambs at approx 12 noon.
COWS & CALVES
An entry of 30 cows and calves met with a good trade. Leading the way at £1860 was EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands, for the Simmental x 2nd Claver with her Limousin x Steer calf, from the same home was a Limousin x cow with her Charolais x steer calf making £1510. R J M Shearer, Tynreithin Hall, presented a Brisih Blue cross 1st calver with her Limousin cross male calf making £1500. F J Owens & Co, Llettygynfach, presented tow similar outfits of Blonde D’Aquitaine Cross cow with her Blonde cross heifer calf and another Blonde cross cow with her male calf making £1440 each. Breakdown of all prices achieved are as follows; £1800 - £2000 1 lots, £1400-£1600 7 lots, £1200-£1400 8 lots, £1000-£1200 9 lots, <£1000 5 lots.
STORE LAMBS & BREEDING EWES
Store Lambs: An increased entry of 821 store lambs seeing a average of £51.50 per head with some smaller lambs forward this week to last. Top price of the day came from T E Davies & Co, Bodiach Hall, for mixed and clean Lleyn Lambs, knocked down to £69.50. Average price for mixed and clean lambs was £57.23. Tup lambs forward from S & DJ Williams, Cefnllech, realised £60. Top price for ewe lambs was achieved by ERP & CM Gethin, Gaer Mill, of £55 for strong Texels. Average price for the section was £50.26.
Breeding Ewes: An increased entry of 785 ewes. Highlights of the section to include a top price of £135 for Suffolk Yearling ewes forward from HEP Pugh, Grove, Two year old Charollais ewes achieved a top price of £132 forward from Gr & SJ Lloyd, Esgair Inglis. Three year old Suffolk ewes achieved a top price of £128. Same again next week with store lambs being sold from 10.30am and breeding ewes from 11am.
STORE CATTLE
A small entry of store cattle met with a steady trade, reflective of the current fat prices. Average price for heifers was 167.40pp/kg and the steer’s averages 181.69pp/kg. Prices achieved were as follows;
