Glyn Davies was not the only local man to win a seat at the elections because Welshpool’s very own Craig Williams is now the new Conservative MP for Cardiff North.

The former researcher comfortably retained the seat for the Conservatives defeating Labour’s Mari Williams by a majority of 2,137 - a significant improvement on the 184 majority won by his predecessor Jonathan Evans in 2010.

Mr Williams is the son of David and Andrea Williams from Greenfields, Welshpool and a former pupil of Gungrog Road, Ysgol Maesydre and Welshpool High School.

He studied at Walford College and Birmingham University before moving into politics as a researcher at the Welsh Assembly Government.

Mr Williams lives in Cardiff with his fiancée Clare, son Charlie and Welsh Springer Spaniel, Winston. He is currently a Cardiff City Councillor and Chairman of the Economy and Culture Committee on the council.

He is a seasoned campaigner and community champion having previously stood in the Parliamentary by-election in Cardiff South and Cardiff West Assembly election where he reduced Rhodri Morgan’s majority by half.

Craig is actively involved in Cardiff life, sitting as a non-executive director of Cardiff Bus and school governor of Pentyrch Primary School and Radyr Comprehensive as well as other community groups across the City.

Until his election he was an active volunteer in the Welsh Conservatives, currently acting as the Chairman for South Wales Central.

Alongside his passions for real ale and rugby, he enjoys the vibrancy of Cardiff and is devoted to rejuvenating the local economy and realising Cardiff’s potential as a leading capital city within the UK and the world.

His mother Andrea Williams said: “We are all very proud of him. It’s a wonderful achievement at 29 to become the youngest Conservative MP.”

After his election Mr Williams said: “This is a clear victory in Cardiff North - a clear victory for David Cameron’s leadership and a clear win for the plan we have which is turning the country round.

“We had a terrific campaign. I’m delighted that our positive campaign, building on David Cameron’s clear leadership in delivery the City Deal for Cardiff, which resonated so well with the people of the city.”
