A primary school-turned-community centre is celebrating 150 years this month with a weekend of activity open to the whole community.
Rhiwhiriaeth School, on the outskirts of Llanfair Caereinion, opened on March 29, 1875, but closed on October 21, 1966. It reopened the following year as a Community Centre with the building serving the local area for a century-and-a-half.
From June 27-29, activities have been arranged with the award-winning Billy Thompson and his remarkable North Wales based Gypsy-style music band playing on the first night. Tickets cost £20 including a BBQ.
On the following morning, there is a 4x4 off road run visiting 3-4 locations giving splendid views of the Rhiwhiriaeth area and beyond. The drive will begin at 11am and end at the centre roughly three hours later. Participants can bring their own picnic and there are no fees or booking required.
The fantastic Pendyrus Male Choir are singing on the Saturday evening with guest conductor Alwyn Humphreys and soloist Jessica Robinson. The Pendyrus Male Choir were formed in 1924 and is the oldest continuously active male choir in the Rhondda. Joining them is guest conductor Dr Alwyn Humphreys MBE, a very well-known TV and radio presenter. Soloist Jessica Robinson was a finalist in the prestigious Cardiff Singer of the World competition and has sung on BBC television. Tickets cost £20.
The Sunday Lunch on June 29 is dedicated to The Llanfair Caereinion Horticulture and Agricultural Show whose president this year is Arwel Rees, also the Chairman of Rhiwhiriaeth Community Centre.
He has decided to host the President’s Lunch as part of the celebrations to highlight Rhiwhiriaeth’s place within the larger community.
All weekend an exhibition will be mounted in the hall illustrating the life and history of the school and its community over the last 150 years.
