CAA and police to enforce no fly zone over Newtown

12/09/2025 @ 12:44

A temporary no-fly zone will be introduced over Newtown town centre this weekend as part of safety measures for two demonstrations due to take place on the same day.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has confirmed the restriction, which will prevent drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles from being flown in key parts of the town on Saturday. It follows a request from Dyfed-Powys Police, who say the step is designed to support public safety.

Two separate protests are planned. One has been organised by the Newtown Action Committee in opposition to proposals to house asylum in the UK. The other is a counter-demonstration by groups wanting to show support for refugees and promote inclusivity.

Both are expected to gather in the town centre at the same time. Police confirmed that additional officers will be present and that traffic and access may be affected.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson said: “We are working closely with partners to ensure both events can go ahead safely. The temporary no-fly zone is one of several measures being taken to minimise disruption and maintain public safety.”

Residents and businesses are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel in and around the town centre while the restrictions are in place.
