Llanfyllin and the Meifod Valley have been removed from a resubmitted proposal for a new National Park for North East Wales.
People are being encouraged to share their views on the proposed Glyndŵr National Park, as Natural Resources Wales (NRW) launches a 12-week statutory consultation beginning today.
The consultation follows two years of detailed evaluation commissioned by Welsh Government, including data gathering, technical assessments, and engagement with communities and stakeholders across the region.
Previous public engagement in 2023 and a public consultation in 2024 helped shape the current proposal. Feedback from these stages has informed the final consultation map and supporting evidence.
Originally, the plan was for Llanfyllin to be the southern gateway for the park, but new plans show the border has been shifted north beyond Llangadfan.
A Montgomeryshire county councillor, Elwyn Vaughan, is opposed to the plans and has explained the new tweaks.
“The new proposal is that Meifod Valley, Llanfyllin and Llanrhaeadr are taken out,” he said. “The new boundary will be from the A458 at Llangadfan to Llwydiarth, then Llanwddyn Hirnant past Penybontfawr and behind Llanrhaeadr, but Llansilin area down to Penybont is included.
“There will now be a further consultation round and I encourage all to participate.”
Those opposing the plans fear it will add an unwanted strain to the scant resources currently available for NRW, as well as the impact it may have on property prices and future development for the villages and towns included in the park.
But Ash Pearce, Programme Manager said: “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect nature, support communities, and shape a better future for this stunning part of Wales.
“We know change can be difficult, but with the right approach, a new National Park could bring real benefits for people, wildlife and the local economy.”
Members of the public, organisations and stakeholders are encouraged to attend an event, examine the proposal and have their say by responding to the consultation.
