Dyfed-Powys Police has a new Chief Constable following the appointment of Mr Ifan Charles.

It was confirmed this week by Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Dafydd Llywelyn after a formal hearing by the Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Panel.

Mr Charles, who joined the force in 2004, takes up the role with immediate effect after serving as Temporary Chief Constable since the resignation of former Chief Constable Dr Richard Lewis earlier this year.

Over his 20-year career, Mr Charles has held a range of positions across both CID and uniformed policing, progressing through the ranks and leading on serious and complex incidents including firearms operations and murder investigations. He became Deputy Chief Constable in July 2024 after previously serving as Assistant Chief Constable.

PCC Dafydd Llywelyn said he was delighted with the appointment: “Mr Charles has demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and a clear vision for the future of Dyfed-Powys Police. He has a deep understanding of the organisation and the communities we serve, and I have every confidence in his ability to lead the Force with integrity, compassion, and determination.”

He added that he looked forward to continuing their work together to deliver visible, effective policing and to support officers, staff, and volunteers across the force area, which includes Powys.

Speaking about his appointment, Chief Constable Charles said: “Being the Chief Constable is about service and delivering today for communities of Dyfed-Powys but also creating and building a legacy of a safer, healthier, and thriving community in the future. I will be authentic, visible, and engaging, focused on thriving relationships with communities, partners, voluntary organisations, and our workforce to ensure that the public and victims remain at the heart of everything we do.”

Professor Ian Roffe, Chair of the Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Panel, congratulated Mr Charles on his appointment, describing him as a “local man who has risen to this role through an open and rigorous competition.”

“His achievement is a source of pride for the area,” he said. “We commend his outstanding service and wish him every success as he takes on this important role.”
