Local fire service urges people to check their electric blankets

Residents in Newtown and Welshpool are being urged to have their electric blankets tested for free later this month to ensure they are safe to use over winter.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is hosting a series of electric blanket testing events across the region, including at Newtown Fire Station on Thursday, October 30 and Welshpool Fire Station on Monday,  November 3, both from 10am to 1pm.

The free service aims to help prevent fires caused by faulty or damaged electric blankets, which can become a serious hazard if not properly maintained.

A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service said: “Electric blankets are a great way to stay warm as temperatures drop, but damaged or worn-out blankets can be dangerous. Testing is quick, easy, and completely free. It’s a simple way to make sure your blanket is safe to use this winter.”

Members of the Service’s Community Safety team will also be available at the events to offer advice on home fire safety and to help residents sign up for a Free Home Safety Check.

Residents are encouraged to drop in during the testing times with their blankets and take the opportunity to get advice on how to keep their homes safe and warm during the colder months.
