Montgomeryshire’s MP Steve Witherden has launched a vicious verbal attack on the President of the United States of America in Parliament, labelling him as a “deviant and a bully”.
Mr Witherden was speaking from the backbenches during a debate on Trump’s astonishing raid on Venezuela where special forces kidnapped its President, Nicolás Maduro, and took him back to the USA to face drugs and gun charges, which he has denied.
It stunned the world and caught Britain off guard with Prime Minister Keir Starmer admitting that he was not forewarned of the raid.
The Prime Minister since has focussed on the next steps, rather than sharing his view on the raid, but his fellow MP, Mr Witherden, hasn’t held back.
He said in Parliament: “President Trump has behaved like a member of a criminal gang. Bombing Venezuela, a sovereign country, kidnapping its head of state and his family and killing many in the process.
“Where next? Colombia? Cuba? Mexico? Panama? Greenland? Here?
“Does my Right Honorouble friend agree that if we do not stand up to deviants and bullies like Trump, they will only be emboldened to repeat their illegal acts elsewhere?
The official No 10 statement issued in the aftermath of the raid said: “The UK has long supported a transition of power in Venezuela. We regarded Maduro as an illegitimate President and we shed no tears about the end of his regime.
“I reiterated my support for international law this morning. The UK government will discuss the evolving situation with US counterparts in the days ahead as we seek a safe and peaceful transition to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people.”
