The proposed new name for the Visitor Information Centre has been thrown out by Welshpool Town Council, leaving us back at square one as to what it should be called!
At a sub-committee earlier this month, and following lengthy debate, a proposal to rename it Welshpool Town Council & Information Centre was sent to full council.
But at last night’s meeting, it was voted down with councillors believing it was too long-winded and something short and sharper was needed.
Public comments made on a MyWelshpool story post covering the meeting were also highlighted by Cllr David France, with a number of people reacting negatively online to the new name.
The debate started because the building is now also home to Welshpool Town Council following a £300,000 upgrade, so councillors felt the name should reflect this.
But the Chair of the Operations & Development Committee, Cllr Phil Pritchard, was visibly annoyed after being told that his committee would have to try again and come back with a new name next month.
“Let’s just call it Welshpool Toilets then?” he said sarcastically after the vote was passed.
A public consultation last August saw 111 people vote to keep it as the Visitor Information Centre and the same number, 111, opted for Welshpool Information Centre.
The issue will be discussed, again, at the next Operations & Development Committee in February.
