There appears to be big plans for Berriew Street toilets, but what they may be are being kept closely under wraps by Welshpool Town Council.
The closed block was due to be sold at auction earlier this year, but at last night’s monthly full council meeting the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, revealed in his annual report that there had been a change of heart.
The topic has been discussed previously in closed sessions, so details are not available, but it could be that the start of the Tour de France from Berriew Street Car Park next year has made the council realise they are in charge of a valuable asset.
“The Berriew Street toilets, regarded as a liability and a drain on our resources have, because of recent events, become more of a valuable asset than we first realised,” he said. “And with the agreement of the council, those were withdrawn from immediate sale and we are currently reviewing all of our options to maximise our benefits to the town and the council from the eventual sale or disposal of that asset, whenever that is.”
The report was covering all of the issues faced this time last year by a specialist review of the state of the Town Council’s properties which showed structures like the Town Hall, Motte & Bailey and toilets needed extensive, and costly, work.
Those projects are ongoing but Cllr Owen said that despite the immediate work that has been carried out, the council’s finances were in a much healthier state.
