School governor shortage prompts appeal

22/10/2026 @ 10:37

People across the Welshpool and Newtown area are being encouraged to become school governors and play a part in shaping the future of education in their communities.

Powys County Council is calling for volunteers from all walks of life to consider taking on the role, which involves helping schools make important decisions, monitor performance and support pupils.

No teaching experience is needed, and applicants do not have to be parents or have children attending the school.

The council says schools benefit from governors with a wide range of backgrounds and skills, including business, finance, volunteering and community work.

Governors work alongside school leaders to help set priorities, oversee progress and ensure pupils’ needs remain at the heart of decision-making.

Cllr James Gibson-Watt, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “School governors make an important contribution to education in Powys. Their time, skills and local knowledge help schools thrive and support children and young people to achieve their potential.

“Becoming a governor is a rewarding way to give something back to your community, share your experience and help shape the future of local education.

“I would encourage anyone who is passionate about supporting learners and strengthening our schools to find out more and consider applying.”

New Local Authority Governors receive induction and ongoing training to help them develop the knowledge and confidence needed for the role.

Anyone interested in finding out about vacancies in their area can visit the Powys County Council school governors webpage.
