Welshpool Town Council has made the tough decision to axe this month’s Carnival procession, and is instead concentrating on holding a fun-filled afternoon at Maesydre.
The number of floats has dwindled in recent years, with clubs, organisations and companies seemingly reluctant to take the risk in these days of strict health and safety and costly insurance.
A spokesperson for the Town Council said: “Following lower than expected interest, the parade element will not take place through the streets of Welshpool this year, however the heart of the Carnival remains firmly intact.
“The focus for 2026 is on bringing the whole community together in one place for a lively, welcoming celebration filled with colour, entertainment, and fun.”
The Carnival takes place on Saturday, June 27 with Welshpool Town Council inviting the area to take part in a “vibrant, fun-filled day as the Welshpool Carnival returns, bringing community spirit, entertainment, and sporting celebration to the heart of the town”.
The event will once again take place at the Maes y Dre Recreation Ground, where a programme of entertainment promises something for all ages.
From 12:50pm to 6pm, the grounds will host a wide variety of attractions, performances, and local showcases.
Here’s what the Town Council is promising:
“The afternoon will feature a fantastic selection of food vendors and craft stalls, alongside live entertainment from the Batala Bermo high-energy samba-reggae band, vintage strongman display and birds of prey display.
“Visitors can enjoy performances and displays from local groups and football activities hosted by Welshpool Town FC will help celebrate this year’s sporting theme, while the Friends of Welshpool CIW Primary School will also be part of the day’s community activities.
“Food vendors include local and regional traders offering everything from gourmet burgers, hot dogs and barbecue favourites to freshly made crêpes, doughnuts, waffles, cakes, ice cream, milkshakes, speciality coffees, Southeast Asian street food and Caribbean-inspired dishes.
“With a strong sports theme, organisers are encouraging everyone to get involved, whether by dressing up, taking part in activities, or simply enjoying the atmosphere.
“Councillors and organisers are enthusiastic about delivering a memorable day that highlights the best of Welshpool’s community spirit.
“Bring your team colours, creativity, and carnival energy and join us for what promises to be a fantastic day for Welshpool.”
