Welshpool’s Mollie’s is going nowhere, says owner

The owner of Welshpool’s Mollie’s sweet shop says it is going nowhere, easing concerns following the closure of its branch in Newtown.

Alan Price has explained the reason behind closing the Newtown shop, and at the same time has reassured the area that Welshpool’s is staying put along with the other four branches under the Mollie’s banner.

Mr Price, the successful businessman also behind the town’s Owl & Pussycat, said that the Newtown branch just wasn’t paying its way anymore but added that the other branches were “all doing well”.

“We had to make the difficult decision over Newtown due to rising costs like utilities and wages,” said Mr Price.

“It wasn’t taken lightly but footfall in Newtown had declined because of the choice in shops following the closure of places like Clarks and New Look.

“We tried cutting down the days to make it sustainable, but it just wasn’t in the end. We loved the shop and our staff over the years have been fantastic.

“We still have five other shops, which we have no intention of closing and they are all doing well.”

Mollie’s was named after Mr Price’s daughter who was a primary school pupil at the time when the first shop opened in Welshpool back in 2010.

Newtown followed along with more branches in Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Telford and Oswestry.
