Century for Sam as Guilsfield mount promotion challenge

Sam Griffiths smashed a memorable century as Guilsfield & Llandrinio returned to winning ways in the Henshalls Shropshire League Division Five.

Opener, Griffiths, hit a majestic 111 not out as his side chased down Church Stretton’s 178 all out at the LHG Oval, keeping his side in second behind leaders Wellington 4th.

Earlier, opener Saif Khalid hit an aggressive 83 for the visitors who at one stage looked to be running away to a big score. But Steve Griffiths (3-19) and Allan Williams (3-17) produced wonderful spells to keep the score in check.

Griffiths then took centre stage with solid support coming from the in-form Martin Owen (25no) to steer them through to a nine-wicket win.

Newtown produced their performance of the season so far to defeat high flying Shifnal by five wickets in Division One.

After electing to field, Newtown bowled well, with Ally Laird taking 3-33, to ensure Shifnal’s 187-5 was within reach with Tom Anderson (67) and Sam Cooke (33) the main run makers as victory was secured with two overs to spare.

Montgomery launched a thrilling run chase in pursuit of Ludlow’s 203-9 in Division Two, but it fell agonisingly short.

Alex Haycock (53) and Aaron Ruff-Cock (53) kept the match alive throughout the chase, but the final wicket fell on the pen-ultimate ball with just four runs needed.

Nick Davies hit 56 as Welshpool posted a decent looking 194 all out for Division Three table toppers Madeley II to chase, but it wasn’t enough in the end as the visitors cruised home in the 41st over with five wickets down.

Newtown II were set an imposing 247-2 to chase by Whitchurch II in Division Five, and despite 45 from Sion Jarman, the response fell well short on 185-8.

Llanidloes blitzed Harcourt to stay second in Division Six, bowling their visitors out for just 32 with Eogan Jones taking an outstanding six wickets for just five runs from eight overs. Openers Will Denham (14) and Rob Davies (20) saw them home after 4.2 overs for an early finish.

Also in Division Six, Montgomery II’s 146-8 was not enough to defend as Allscott Heath II secured a seven-wicket victory.
