Welshpool’s Tomi Bowen battled back from a torrid opening round to win the prestigious Bernard Darwin Youth Salver in Rye, Sussex.

The Welsh international bounced back from a first round 11-over 79, played in awful conditions, to card further rounds of 68, 66 and 72 to win by a single shot.

According to Golf News 24, the open competition regularly attracts many of best U-21s in the country and Bowen managed to fend off Bognor Regis’s Harry Malin in second and Scotland’s Alex North (St Andrews) in third with just three shots separating the top eight.

“I think it was the only time I wasn’t too disappointed with an 11-over round,” the 20-year-old said of the conditions Golf News 24.

“I didn’t play that badly in the first round. I was just a little bit off in every department. However, the second round was a lot more enjoyable. It was playing tough and I stayed optimistic."

Top three (Par 68)

1. Tomi Bowen (+5, Welshpool) 79, 68, 66, 72, 285 (+13)

2. Harry Malin (+3, Bognor Regis) 75, 68, 74, 69, 286 (+14)

3. Alex North (+3, St Andrews) 75, 72, 69, 70, 286 (+14)
