A new elite athlete is emerging from Welshpool after boxer Lennox McDonald signed terms to have a crack at the professional game.

The 19-year-old has been boxing since he was nine, and following an impressive junior and amateur career, the teenager is ready to take on the professional ranks with a possible fight as soon as November.

“I’ve been boxing since I was nine years old and never looked back,” said Lennox. “I started my career at Shrewsbury School of Boxing, which is a very good gym, and then moved to my hometown club in Welshpool which, again, is a very good gym.”

Lennox spent four months training with Warren Sinden at Welshpool prior to putting pen to paper and he credits the former professional boxer with “getting my fitness to the top level”.

He has now signed with Impact Boxing Academy in Stoke-on-Trent where he is trained by Scott Lawton.

Despite his youthful age, Lennox already has a wealth of experience and has caught the eye with some fantastic performances over the years.

He recalls one, in particular, that announced his arrival on the boxing scene.

“The highlight of my career so far was in only my seventh fight when I travelled to Coventry in my van with my coach, and beat England’s No 1 boxer who was a four-time national champion and England representative. I beat him on a unanimous decision.”

Getting to the top though comes with many personal sacrifices but Lennox has no problem in missing out while others his age may be out partying.

“Boxing has kept me in shape. When others my age are in pubs drinking, I’m running five miles in the cold,” he said. “I suggest boxing for everyone as it helps the mind and will just make you feel better in yourself, boxing is all I know and I’m excited for the next chapter.”

Lennox has praised his sponsor, SR Security & K9 Services, for their support “with various kit and equipment” and also to “all those who have helped and supported me through this journey”.
