Welshpool chance for an American dream

Aspiring football coaches in the Welshpool area are being offered the chance to work in the USA next summer by a former resident.

Kurtis Smith lived in Newtown, but is now residing in the USA where he is actively engaged in the field of football coaching and player development.

During his time in Newtown, Kurtis pursued a football academy course at Coleg Powys from 2010 to 2012 and also played for Newtown Football Club from his youth years through the U19s and Reserves teams, as well playing on other local senior clubs such as Abermule, Kerry and Churchstoke.

He also helped coach the U19s and academy teams at Newtown FC before studying Football and Sports Coaching & Performance at the University of South Wales from 2012 to 2015.

But he will be back next month to offer local people the chance to follow in his footsteps with a coaching recruitment event in Welshpool on December 2, from 10am-12pm at Maesydre.

This event is being organised in collaboration with Newtown College and is open to any individuals aged 18 or older by June 2024, regardless of their background or affiliation.

“In my current role as the Director of Club Development at Beestera Soccer Training, I oversee a soccer coaching company based in Albany, New York, specialising in team coaching, private training and soccer camps,” said Kurtis.

“Our organisation is proudly affiliated with NIKE Sports Camps. Furthermore, I serve as the coach of a Women’s College Soccer Team at Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, NY, and the Women's Premier Soccer League Team known as the New York Shockers, situated in Albany, NY.”
“As part of our UK tour, which also includes a recruitment event at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, we are actively seeking young, aspiring coaches interested in joining us in New York to work on our soccer camps in the Summer of 2024. Welshpool has been included as one of our stops on this journey.”
