Bay prove too strong for Pool

28/11/2023 @ 10:00

It was second disappointing result for Welshpool on the bounce as they strive to keep in the top three of the WRU North Wales Division Two, writes Gary Williams.

Visitors Colwyn Bay were always going to be a tough challenge and their 5-19 win allowed them to jump over the Maesydre men into second spot.

It was all home pressure early in the game but no points were scored and, against the run of play and on their first meaningful attack, the visitors scored a try and conversion to take the lead. Pool regained the initiative and when Ryan Goodwin scored a try out wide, the large home support was hoping for more to come.

Unfortunately for Pool, that was it as far as scoring was concerned, going in to the break 5-12 down.

A dour second half in the gathering gloom saw yellow cards a-plenty, lots of endeavour but no breakthrough for either side until the last minute when The Bay sealed an impressive away win with a try for the 5-19 win.

Newtown’s home game against Abergele was postponed due to the visitors having a bout of Covid in their camp.

In Division One North, COBRA gave high-flyers Llandudno a scare in Meifod.

Trailing 0-14 going into the final quarter, a couple of scores by the hosts led to a grandstand finish with ‘Dudno just holding on to gain more precious points in their chase at the top end of the table with a 10-14 win.

COBRA’s second string lost their second consecutive game in Division Three North East, away to unbeaten Machynlleth. The final scoreline of 25-13 takes Mach to the top of the table with COBRA three points behind in second spot.

Llanidloes gained a losing bonus point in their 21-20 loss at Rhosllanerchrugog.

In the RGC Youth Plate, COBRA's Youth took another step towards the final with a convincing 43-8 win against Caernarfon.
