Old rivals square up for end of year derby

30/12/2023 @ 08:51

Another fantastic year of local rugby will reach a potential explosive climax when Newtown host Welshpool in Division Two North Wales, writes Gary Williams.

Welshpool’s visit to their greatest rivals gives them the chance to get themselves back in to the promotion race, but the hosts, just three points behind in the table, are capable of handing Pool another defeat.

Welshpool Head Coach, Daley Jones, said: “What a game to end 2023 with both sides doing so well in the league. Newtown, in front of their own supporters, is no easy place to get a result at, but we know that on our day we can beat anybody in this league and we will turn up in good spirits and with confidence high.”

After playing nine games each, Pool are on 27 points with six wins under their belt and Newtown have 24 points with five wins, one draw and three defeats.

Definitely 'The Rec' is the place to head to where you can blow those cobwebs away and witness a full-blooded battle between two improving sides.

In Division One North, COBRA hope to arrest their recent slide down the table with another difficult trip to Pwllheli.

Defeat will ensure that the Meifod men remain in a small group above winless Dolgellau and every point is vital. A tough game to end 2023 and any point gained will be very welcome.

COBRA’s second string, sitting third in Division Three North East, face a tough trip away to inconsistent Llanidloes. The home side have been making improvements in recent games and although there is a wide gap in their league positions, Llani are more than capable of springing a surprise with home advantage and a full-strength squad.

Machynlleth, league leaders and unbeaten in Division Three North East, face a tricky away trip to mid-table Mold 2nds. As always, home advantage is important and if Mach turn up with anything less than their full-strength squad, they will be given a severe test.
