The Welshpool & District Darts League Sponsored by The New Saints FC has reached the halfway stage with another night of twists and turns setting up a tremendous second half of the season, writes Steve Lloyd.

The Grapes A completed the first half with a 6-1 victory over the Punchbowl, but as five of the games finishing 2-1, it was a lot closer than the score suggests. Brian Jones winning the only game for the Punchbowl.

The Green Dragon A moved second with a 5-2 win over the Grapes B who also finish in the top half of the table. Of note was the father-and-son doubles team Mitch and Rhys Butler winning their match.

The local derby between the Guilsfield teams ended with the Kings Head taking the village bragging rights 5-2.

The Kings raced into a 4-0 lead before Hywel Lloyd pulled a game back for the Oak. The teams then shared the doubles. The Kings’ Gareth Steadman hit two 180s and a 17-dart leg and Kacey Jones hit a fine 16-dart leg.

Grapes A lead with 56 points, Green Dragon A are second on 54, Horse and Jockey third with 51 and then come Kings Head (42), Green Dragon B (41) and the Grapes B (40).

Punchbowl and the Red Lion played their rearranged game on Friday evening with the Red Lion coming out 4-3 winners after racing into a 4-1 lead with Mike Hall winning the only game for the Punchbowl. However, he must have inspired because they won both of their doubles matches.

The Green Dragon C came out 5-2 victors over Castle whose Paul Roberts won the only singles before the doubles were shared. These teams have to do it all again next week in the cup.

The Westwood completed a 5-2 victory over the Red Lion. Arwyn Watkins and Glyn Davies took the two games for the Red Lion, while Alan James, Steve Lloyd and Dave Watson won for the Westwood. The Westwood took both doubles.

With only the Castle to play a re-arranged game, the second division looks like this: Westwood A – 38 points, Red Lion – 33 points, Punchbowl – 30 points, The Oak – 29 points, Green Dragon C – 24 points, Castle – 11 points.

Next week is the Canalside Carpets League Cup prelims and the week after is the first round proper.
