Welshpool and Newtown recorded superb wins that have ensured both clubs are well in the hunt for promotion in WRU North Wales Division Two, writes Gary Williams.
Welshpool gave Abergele a thumping which moved them back into joint second in the table with three tries in the opening 20 minutes doing the damage. But for a 10-minute blip, when Pool had two players in the sin bin and Gele pulled it back to 17-8, Pool had control of the game to run out 45-13 winners.
It was a great confidence booster ahead of the visit of league leaders Denbigh next week in what could be a classic.
Newtown, 21-0 down at the interval at Shotton Steel, staged a remarkable comeback to take the spoils, scoring 32 unanswered points in a blistering second half performance to keep them very much in contention near the top.
In Division One North, there was disappointment for COBRA as their game received a late call off at Bala due to frozen ground conditions.
Their second team however, after some stern Mold 2nds resistance, gained a 24-14 win which moved them closer to unbeaten leaders Machynlleth at the top of Division Three North East.
The home games for Machynlleth and Llanidloes were postponed.
COBRA’s youth team gained an impressive 51-5 home win against Wrexham in a friendly.
