Thrilling opening round cup matches

The Welshpool & District Darts League Cup Sponsored by Canalside Carpets produced some cracking preliminary round ties on Friday night, writes Steve Lloyd.

All four best-of-seven games were won by the odd game, with The Westwood beating the Grapes B, 4-3. Match-of-the-night was Andy Ralph (Ralphy) v Steve Lloyd with both players scoring 180s in a high-quality tie ending with Ralphy winning 2-1. The deciding last leg doubles was won by Westwood’s John Gibb and Alan James.

The Green Dragon B lost to the Red Lion Llanfair by the same score with Tom Evans (Red Lion) hitting a 180. The last leg of the doubles was won by the Red Lion’s Glyn Davies and Arwyn Watkin.

The Oak Guilsfield also lost out to the Kings Head in their second derby in two weeks with the score closer this time. At 3-3, Dave Rix and Kacey Jones won the last doubles to take the Kings into the first round proper.

The last prelim saw Castle A take on the Green Dragon C who took the honours. The heroes in the last leg were Dave Knight and Gethin Stephens.
