Rivals continue chase for promotion

26/01/2024 @ 09:21

The local rugby scene is reaching the ‘business end’ of the season with both Welshpool and Newtown in with a serious bid of clinching promotion to WRU Division One North, writes Gary Williams.

And what a game we have in store at Welshpool where Denbigh, league leaders, travel to the Maesydre to take on a side that has regained its early season form in the last couple of games, and will be relishing the chance to put a spoke in the visitor's wheel.

Pool are joint second in the table with Colwyn Bay, although having played two more games and head coach, Daley Jones, said: “It's a massive game this weekend and our chance to well and truly put ourselves back in the promotion race.

“If we’re as clinical with our try scoring as we were last week against Abergele, there is absolutely no reason why we can't continue our winning run against Denbigh. We have five league games left and I believe we can get points from everyone.”

Newtown, three points behind Pool but with a game in hand, host a very unpredictable Rhyl side who, on their day, can upset the form book. With home advantage, I’m expecting a confident Newtown to take full points.

Next weekend (February 3), it’s a week off from league rugby because of the Six Nations, but make a note in your diary for February 10 when Welshpool host Newtown in what is likely to be a make or break game for these biggest rivals.

Unfortunately, in Division One North, COBRA’s home game against Dolgellau has been postponed with the visitors, without a win and virtually certain to be relegated, unable to raise a side.

All three Mid Wales teams playing in Division Three North East are away. Llanidloes look to have a tricky tie at Mold 2nds whilst unbeaten table toppers, Machynlleth, should have enough firepower to continue their fantastic winning sequence. COBRA 2nds, sitting just below the leaders in second spot, albeit having played a couple of games more, will have to be at their best against a Flint side who have struggled on their travels but present a very different challenge on home territory.

COBRA’s youth team host Mold in the North Wales Youth league.
