“I am a farmer”

If you hadn’t heard of Will Evans before Sunday, you will certainly know who he is now after a man-of-the-match performance against Manchester United got the football world talking.

But it’s the nature of some of the comments after his goal-scoring heroics that made many in our area a little unhappy, referring to the striker’s farming background.

Evans was raised on a dairy farm near Llangedwyn and prior to moving to Newport County from Bala Town, he was still working at the business.

BBC presenter Gary Lineker somewhat disparagingly said Evans played in a ‘farmer’s league’, but the star had his own response to another online.

TNT Sports posted to its two million followers on X along with a cow emoji: “Three years ago Will Evans was a dairy farmer. He just scored against Man United in the FA Cup.”

To which, the former Llanfyllin High School pupil proudly replied: “Yes, I’m a farmer.”

Manchester United went on to win the match 4-2, much to the delight of another former Llanfyllin High School pupil, Eric Ramsay, who is an assistant coach at United.

But it was Evans that caught the eye, with many predicting a lucrative move up the football ladder for the 26-year-old.
