The top of the Welshpool and District Darts League sponsored by The New Saints FC is still tight following another Friday night of thrilling action, writes Steve Lloyd.

The Kings Head beat the Grapes A, 6-1, with Kacey Jones getting the Kings off to a great start, but Chris White pulled it back for the Grapes B, before Neil Summers, Gareth Steadman and Ian (Speedy) Ward pulled the Kings further ahead. They then won the two doubles matches. Steadman also threw a 180.

The Horse and Jockey kept up the pressure at the top by beating the Green Dragon B, 5-2. Steve Owen, Liam Marsden and Liam Richards took the singles for the Jockey with Craig Edgar and Cameron Williams replying for the visitors. The Jockey then won both doubles matches. Cameron Williams (Green Dragon B), Liam Richards, Ben Marsden and Leigh Marsden (Horse and Jockey) all hit 180s.

In the final game of the first division, the highly anticipated clash between the Green Dragon A and Grapes A did not disappoint. The visitors raced into a 2-0 lead with the in-form Jamie Cater and Ben Davies winning their games, before Shaun Humphries pulled a game back for the Dragon.

Keith Gamble then restored the two-game cushion before Steve Price blitzed the board with 13, 14 and 15-dart finishes which included 2x180s. He averaged 35.8 per dart and 107.4 per pitch. The doubles were shared.

The Grapes A stay top by one point from the Horse and Jockey with the Green Dragon A a further four points behind the leaders.

In the second division, it’s all change at the top with the Red Lion Llanfair taking top spot. The Red came out 7-0 winners at the Oak, Guilsfield, with Arwyn Watkins, Tom Evans, Clive Jones, Gwynne Evans (119 finish) and Glyn Davies all winning their games for the Red and taking both doubles matches.

The Westwood dropped to second by one point with a hard-fought 4-3 victory at the Green Dragon C. Dave Knight started the evening with a fine bull finish in his game for the Dragon C, but Alan (Jimmy) James pulled it back for the Westwood. Roger Knight then restored the lead for the Dragon C before Dave Watson and Martyn Whitby took their games for the visitors. The doubles were shared.

Castle A succumbed to the Punchbowl 2-5 on home turf with Mark Smith and John Coulson starting well for the home team, but Brian Jones, Gary Lewis and Gary Griffiths for the Punchbowl had other ideas. The Puncbowl took both doubles.

It’s Cup action next week. Kings Head take on the Grapes B at the Oak Inn Guilsfield, while Dragon B face Punchbowl at the Grapes. It’s Grapes A v Horse and Jockey at the Westwood and Red Lion v Green Dragon A at Castle Caereinon.
