26/03/2024 @ 09:43

The Welshpool and District Darts League sponsored by The New Saints FC will be decided by a play-off after the Green Dragon A and Grapes A finished the season on 80 points, writes Steve Lloyd.

It was tight going into the final night, and it was a 16th night of dramatic action with both sides playing at the same Green Dragon venue.

The late surge from the Green Dragon A continued as they beat the Kings Head 6-1 with Mitch Butler (180), Rob Shingler, Steve Price (180) and Rhys Butler giving the home side a 4-0 lead, before Kacey Jones pulled one back for the Kings. The Dragon A then took both doubles. Gareth Steadman of the Kings Head also hit a 180 in his game.

On the next board at the same time, the Green Dragon B welcomed the Grapes A with Dan Hosein putting the hosts in front before Jamie Cater, Keith Gamble, Steve Proctor and Jordan Harding took the next singles for the Grapes A who also took the doubles.

So, at 1-6 there will now be a play off to decide the Champions and Runners Up with the date and venue to be confirmed.

In the other first division game, long time leaders the Horse and Jockey picked up a 7-0 win against the Grapes B, leaving them just four points behind the top two.

The second division saw two teams making it a nervy end to the season. The Punchbowl took revenge for a first half of the season defeat at the hands of the Westwood A to win 4-3, with Tim Barley (15-dart 501), Brian Jones (180) both winning along with Garry Lewis.

For Westwood, Duncan Cork and Dave Watson won their matches, with the doubles shared.

The Red Lion Llanfair started the evening three points adrift of the Westwood, but fell to The Green Dragon C, 5-2.

Al Moore, Dave Knight and Roger Knight took the singles matches for the Green Dragon C, while Tom Evans and Wynne Price won for the Red Lion. The Green Dragon C took both doubles, meaning the title goes to the Westwood A with the The Red Lion Llanfair taking runners up.

The Oak Guilsfield won 5-2 at Castle A who had Mark Smith and Brian Williams in form. But Hywel Lloyd (160 shot out), Mike Walsh and Dai Walsh won for the Oak, who went on to claim the doubles.

There will be no action this week due to it being Good Friday.
