North Wales Cup action for Welshpool

30/03/2024 @ 04:10

Welshpool, having finished their North Wales league games, now concentrate on the North Wales Cup and their first fixture is away to Bro Ffestiniog today.

Despite having done the double over Bro in the league, the Maesydre team will have to be at their best to start their cup campaign with a win.

Following Pool's win last weekend against Shotton Steel in their last league game of the season, they now sit in the second promotion spot in the league but know that a win for Nant Conwy 2nds (home v Shotton) would push Pool agonisingly in to third and if Colwyn Bay win their four remaining games with bonus points they would then pip Nant Conwy to the second spot, pushing Pool in to fourth.

Lots of 'ifs' and until that final whistle goes, Pool are still in the promotion pot.

The Division Two Cup formula is for two groups of five (using all 10 teams from Division Two North) and the winner of each group going through to final at Parc Eirias in May.

Joining Welshpool in Group A are league winners Denbigh, Newtown, Bro Ffestiniog and Shotton. However, Shotton have pulled out of this competition because they still have four league games to play and won't be able to fit the games in as well.

So, Pool have Bro away today, followed by home games against Denbigh (next week) and Newtown (April 10). A win on the road would set up a mouth-watering prospect for the two home games.

In Division Three North East, COBRA 2nds entertain Wrexham 2nds. The visitors are only a couple of places behind the second played Meifod outfit and this could be a high-scoring game with home advantage possibly proving the difference.

In the same division, unbeaten leaders Machynlleth, will be looking to continue their fine form when Bala 2nds are the visitors. Llanidloes, still smarting from a mauling at Machynlleth in their last game, face another daunting task when they travel to third placed Ruthin 2nds. A tough ask for the Llani boys but, at their best and with a full squad, they are a match for anybody in this division.
