Welshpool elite athlete, Adele Nicoll, steps back onto the ice this weekend to take on the world’s best once again, just eight weeks after suffering a painful ATFL rupture in her right ankle.
Adele, 28, will be competing in the season-opening World Cup series event in Altenberg, Germany, in both the monobob and two-woman events, and despite spending the autumn fighting back from injury, she is confident of building on last year’s successful debut season.
In January, with Welsh breakwoman Kya Placide, the duo won gold in the two-woman event at the Europa Cup in St Moritz, Switzerland, before finishing off the season with a silver medal at the final round of the World Cup in Lake Placid, USA.
She spoke to us from her digs in Germany last night to reassure us that despite only returning to full training last week, she will be looking to make an immediate impact.
“This season I am just hoping to build the skills that we developed last season,” she said. “I want to see our average performances improve from top 10 to pushing into the top eight.
“I am currently eight weeks after ATFL rupture in my right ankle, so to Christmas I am racing in Altenberg this weekend and Sigulda (Latvia) next weekend and I will just be focussing on my return to fitness and my driving skills and learning two very difficult tracks. Altenburg is a new track and one of the toughest in the world so watch this space!”
Adele will be racing in the two-woman event with new breakwoman, Risqat Fabunmi-Alade, with No 1. breakwoman, Placide, coming back into the fray next week.
“I will be racing with Fabi this weekend, one of my new team members, and then we will do a re-evaluation at Christmas to see who will be completing the season and World Cup series for the rest of the season with me.
“I only started practising on ice this week, so I am just going into tomorrow (Saturday) looking forward to racing again and just going to do my best.”
