Newtown, Monty win, but defeats for Welshpool and Guilsfield

Newtown bounced back from an opening day defeat to pick up a big win at Shelton in the Shropshire Premier League.

The host’s decision to field backfired as David Laird (63) top scored as Newtown set a decent first innings total of 253 all out.

The bowlers then took control with Marco Malan 4-24 topping the figures to dismiss Shelton for just 105 in 32.2 overs.

Montgomery are showing some fine early season Division Two form and recorded their second win at home to Forton, whose run chase fell short.

Rob Bennett (59) top scored as Monty posted 203-9, before some tight bowling from the hosts restricted Forton to just 183-7 from their 40 in reply.

Both Welshpool and Guilsfield & Llandrinio lost in Division Three, with the latter put to the sword at St Georges II.

Dave Williams (27) top scored as the villagers could only muster 113, and despite three early wickets, St Georges II eased to a seven-wicket win.

Harry Aldridge (7-17) and Jonathon Davies (3-12) combined to destroy Priorslee for just 30 runs and fire Newtown II to the top of Division Four.

Llanidloes chased down Iscoyd & Fenns Bank’s target of 156, also in Division Four.

All-rounder Will Denham led the way for Llanidloes with 3-40, before supporting Daniel Lewis (94) with an unbeaten 39 in a 137 second-wicket stand that secured the eight-wicket win.

Welshpool II were dismissed for just 44 at Wellington IV in Division Six, and Montgomery II suffered a 123-run defeat at Forton II, who had posted an unassailable 253 for them to chase. Keelan Serjeant (48) was the only bright spot for Monty.

Veteran Allan Williams (3-24) and Phil Edwards (3-10) paved the way for Guilsfield & Llandrinio II to pick up a big win over Harcourt in Division Seven.

The pair helped the villagers dismiss Harcourt for just 74 at the LHG Oval, and as early wickets tumbled in reply, Rich Lewis held his nerve with an unbeaten 37 to steer the Guils home with five wickets to spare.
