Anderson shines in Montgomery draw

Montgomery kept their Division Two promotion bid on track with a dramatic draw that saw them bowl Albrighton out for 161 – the same score they had set in their own first innings.

Tom Anderson (pictured by Phil Blagg) top scored with 48 as Monty posted a target of 161, and he then took 5-34 to ensure a split of the points and to hold onto second spot in the league.

Newtown’s improved form in the Shropshire Premier League continued with more vital points picked up in a winning draw at home to Ludlow.

Ben Price (63) and David Laird (47) led the way as Newtown posted 228-9 before Nathan Smith (3-51) and his fellow bowlers restricted the visitors to 187-8 in reply.

A mid-order 88 from Pat Wilding spurred Welshpool towards victory over Church Stretton in Division Three. Nick Roberts added an unbeaten 37 as Pool set 215-7.

Rob Anderson then span his way to 5-42 as the visitors were reduced to 139 all out.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio lost a nail-biter at Church Aston by six runs as their fight for Division Three survival looks set to go right to the wire with five games to go.

It was another improved showing, with Dave Jones (4-14), Allan Williams (3-76) and Nasir Uddin (3-45) toiling hard in the blistering sun to dismiss the hosts for 168.

But, despite a fine captain’s innings from Dave Lewis (36) that put them within touching distance of victory, they couldn’t quite get across the line and finished on 162 all out. Adam Knight (29) and Matt Knight (26) had put them in a strong early position before wickets tumbled.

A solid mid-order 46 not out from Will Denham helped Llanidloes set a winning first innings score of 198-7 at Pontesbury in Division Four, with Josh Hugo (5-30) and Adrian Foulkes (4-55) then ensuring they finished short on 170.

Riley Bellamore (4-9) led Newtown II to a hard-earned Division Four victory at Frankton II who were bowled out for 143. His brother Finley then finished unbeaten on 45 to see Newtown home in the 25th over with seven wickets down.

In Division Six, Alex Haycock smashed 85 as Montgomery II picked up a 106-run win over Acton Reynald. Monty posted 235-9, which was more than enough as youngsters Jac Yewdall (3-20) and Elliot Turner (3-15) helped to dismiss the hosts for just 129.

Keiran Evans took 6-20 as Welshpool II eased to a nine-wicket win at Willey II who were bowled out for 161.

Pat Davies then took centre stage with an unbeaten 106 to guide Pool through to victory, with Henry Day adding 36 not out.

Meanwhile, Richard Lewis hit a superb unbeaten 86 as Guilsfield & Llandrinio compiled a mighty 269-7 to put Division Seven leaders Quatt III on the back foot. Rupert Shingler (52), Jinil Thilakan (48) and Gary Griffiths (30) also contributed, but the bowlers couldn’t get on top, allowing Quatt to hold out on 203-7 for a share of the spoils. Steve Griffiths took 3-37.

Ian Hancocks hit an unbeaten 103, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Newtown III suffering a rare Sunday Division Three loss at Allscott Heath III.

Newtown posted 226-7, but it wasn’t enough as despite three wickets each for openers Owain Jones and Rhys Jones, the hosts secured a two-wicket win.

Calum Jones (100no) fired Llanidloes II to victory after they posted an impressive 307-8 against Madeley IV who were restricted to just 196-7 from their 40 overs.
