RUGBY: Welshpool pull out of today’s match

20/09/2025 @ 09:05

Welshpool’s Division One North game at Colwyn Bay is off today (Saturday) due to the Maesydre club being unable to field a team, writes Gary Williams.

Injuries and unavailability have left the club with too few players to travel north and Welshpool Head Coach, Daley Jones, said: “We knew this weekend would be a problem with unavailability and with the injuries picked up in the first two games we were left with no choice to call off and re-arrange for later in the season.

“We have a free weekend next week too as it is cup weekend and we have a bye, so we’re hoping the injuries will have cleared up and that we’ll be back to a full squad for the Bala away game on October 4.”

Meanwhile, COBRA can prepare for the visit of Ruthin in confident mood after kickstarting their season with the 59-7 defeat of neighbours Welshpool. On their day, Ruthin can be formidable but home advantage may well play its part when the final whistle is blown.

In Division Two, there is another Mid Wales derby as Machynlleth, fresh from their fine win against Dolgellau in the season opener, host Llanidloes who will be looking to get their first points of the season.

It’s early in the season but Mach are going to be very difficult to beat on their home patch if they are at full strength and Llani will be desperate to get some points on the table so it should be competitive, but I'm expecting a home win in this one.

Also in Division Two, Newtown, after their opening season win, will be looking forward to taking on Rhyl, also comfortable winners in their first game, at the Rec. This game is so important for both clubs, despite it only being the second game of the season, that it’s likely to be played in a cup final atmosphere. Really looking forward to seeing which way this one goes.

COBRA 2nds will be playing their first league game of the season, away against current leaders Mold 2nds and they really need to come back to Meifod with points of some description to signal their intent of being up there with the leaders at the business end of the season.

COBRA Youth travel to Denbigh in the North East Wales Youth League while Newtown Youth entertain Mold with a 2pm kick off.

When the results come in on Saturday evening, we will be able to see if any patterns are developing and start thinking about who may be the teams to look out for league table honours and those who may be looking at a very difficult season.

Next Saturday, it is WRU Cup week and both Welshpool and COBRA have byes in the Division One Cup.
