It’s cup weekend for the local WRU clubs and in the Division One Cup both Welshpool and COBRA have received byes in to Round 2, which takes place on October 25, writes Gary Williams.
Welshpool will be glad of another week off to try and reduce their injury list in readiness for Bala away next weekend in the league, whereas COBRA, on the back of two successive league wins, will be unhappy that the cup has put a halt to their charge up the table.
The Division Three WRU Cup, which includes the clubs in Division Two North, has thrown up some intriguing ties. Newtown, currently in top spot in the league, host Mold who hold second. Today’s cup fixture may well give us some indication as to which might be the early favourites for those promotion spots.
Llanidloes, who narrowly lost 11-9 at Machynlleth last weekend, have the chance of quick revenge when the two meet in the cup at Cae Hafren. Home advantage may well be the decider in this one.
COBRA’s second team, due to be playing Denbigh 2nds away in the WRU Division Five Cup have been awarded the tie by Denbigh who can’t raise a side.
The women’s team from COBRA have also suffered the same fate with their game against Llanidloes being called off.
However, both COBRA and Welshpool have many junior teams playing on Sunday so it’s not a complete washout for the clubs.
Newtowns Youth, buoyant after an excellent win last weekend against Mold, make the trip to Rhyl where they can expect another tough challenge.
