Welshpool looking for continued improvement

16/01/2026 @ 12:28

Welshpool, encouraged by some close encounters in their last two games, welcome second-placed Bala to Maesydre where they will again be looking to build and provide some stern opposition to their high-flying visitors, writes Gary Williams.

Bala, after an inconsistent start to the season, are now firing on all cylinders and have marched up to second place. A big test for the hosts but, backed by their usual vociferous supporters, ’Pool should certainly let Bala know that they’ve been in a game.

Elsewhere in Division One North, COBRA are on the road to their furthest fixture by distance, to take on Llangefni.

Sitting just one place above their hosts in the table, COBRA will have to be at their best to stop the home side sneaking a win with their home advantage.

In Division Two North, Newtown’s supporters will be looking for a big points tally in a likely win against Denbigh, who currently occupy one of the two relegation spots. This could be the perfect fixture for the Newtown side and should give them confidence for when they travel to league leaders Mold next weekend.

In the same Division, Llanidloes, without a win this season, face another daunting away game, this time against Abergele who, although only three places above bottom club Llani, should be too hot to handle for the Mid Wales boys who will have to be at their very best with a full squad to come home with the spoils.

Machynlleth travel to a Bro Ffestiniog side who, although eight points behind Mach in the table, have three games in hand.

However, Mach with a full squad have already shown this season that they are a match for anybody in this division. Expect Bro to throw everything at the visitors early on and Mach to come back strongly as the game progresses.

On Sunday, Llanidloes Ladies have the chance to progress to the semi-finals of the WRU National Women’s Bowl competition when they host Porthcawl Ladies. Hard to predict when a South Wales side travels north but best of luck to Llanidloes Ladies who will hopefully join Machynlleth Ladies (after their 29-19 win against COBRA Ladies last Sunday), in the semi-final.
