Newtown end losing streak but Monty, Pool, Guils all lose

Newtown have thrown themselves a late lifeline to try and save their Shropshire Premier League status.

The town’s long run without a win ended on Saturday with a tremendous victory at Ludlow thanks largely to an unbeaten century from overseas all-rounder Jordan Baijnath (111 not out).

The bowling attack played their part earlier, restricting Ludlow to 212-9 from their 50 overs with three wickets apiece for Baijnath, Griff Davies and Nathan Smith.

But it was the knock from Baijnath that saw them home in the 45^th over, with Ben Price supporting on 32.

Montgomery’s hopes of surviving in Division One took another blow after being dismissed for 58 chasing Oswestry’s 234 all out.

It was a bleak day too for our local promotion chasers in Division Three with Guilsfield & Llandrinio and Welshpool both losing.

The villagers could only make 155 all out for leaders Condover to chase with Nasir Uddin top scoring again on 83. The Shropshire side cruised to victory for the loss of five wickets.

Welshpool suffered a five-wicket defeat at Column after being dismissed for 136. Tom Bowen top scored with 38.

Llanidloes closed the gap on Newtown II at the top of Division Four without even playing after Bomere Heath II handed them maximum points for not being able to raise a team.

Newtown II won the lion’s share of the points in a draw at home to Frankton II who were restricted to 143-5 chasing Newtown’s target of 193-7. Mike Bellamore had top scored with 50 and also took two wickets.

Welshpool II came up well short in their pursuit of Shrewsbury III’s 234-8. Neil Pryce took 3-26. But Pool could only muster 138 with Dale Evans (34) top scoring.

Dan Perkins hit an unbeaten 50 runs to guide Montgomery II to 195-8 in their Division Six victory over Column II who were bowled out for just 63. Rob Yewdall (4-13) and Tom Corfield (3-8) were the lead wicket-takers.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio II suffered a five-wicket defeat, also in Division Six, having posted 154-7 with opener Rupert Shingler carrying his bat for an unbeaten 66. Matt White (22) and Fred White (19) also contributed. But Quatt III got stuck in and reached victory in the 29^th over.

On Sunday, Newtown III’s 182 all out wasn’t enough in Division Three as Chelmarsh reached a two-wicket victory in the 29^th over. A century from Barry Bellis (105) was undoubtedly the highlight.

In Division Four, opener Ethan Owen smashed 100 not out as Llanidloes II posted a massive 302-7 for Wellington VI to chase. The visitors finished on 220-6.
