An award-winning local care company is offering people over the age of 50 positions in care after it was the revealed number of unemployed over-50s has leapt by a third in a year.
Recent research revealed the number of over-50s out of work increased by 33% in 2020 with 371,000 people unemployed in July to September, compared with 280,000 in 2019.
Neil Griffiths (pictured), Regional Manager at Abacare, which provides care across Welshpool, said: “It is widely thought that young people have been the most affected by the pandemic due to mass redundancies in sectors such as hospitality, leisure and retail, but it has been less well documented that the over-50s have seen a bigger rise in unemployment.”
The analysis of Office for National Statistics data was conducted by Rest Less, a jobs board and careers advice website for the over-50s.
Neil added: “Previous research has shown that once the over-50s are unemployed, they are significantly more likely to remain that way than their younger peers.
“We fully appreciate the value that workers over the age of 50 bring, including career and general life experience, and we understand that many of them are looking for more flexible work to fit around their lifestyles, which is why we welcome the more mature worker and believe care is a great career option for them. We have many care staff members who are over the age of 50.
“Here we treat all our carers and office staff the same, whatever their age. As long as you’re kind, committed and caring, you’ll fit right in. We can provide flexible working hours to fit around your lifestyle, so if you need to look after grandchildren or just want to work a minimum amount of hours per-week, that’s no problem.
“You’re also never too old to learn and we offer free, full training, which includes a company induction, dementia awareness, enablement, first aid, health and safety, food safety, infection control, medication, person centred care and moving and handling service users, and for anyone who is committed and passionate about care, we also offer the opportunity to undertake qualifications too.”
Abacare operates a professional Care Management Team that is committed to providing high quality care to individuals in their own homes.
The large team of trained, specialist, care workers provide positive based outcomes and person-centred care to people throughout the UK.
Neil continued: “New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for all major brands as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking for a change of career or someone who just fancies a bit of a change. Being a carer is an extremely rewarding job and you get to meet lots of wonderful people too.
“We’re supporting our colleagues in the NHS wholeheartedly, as we do on a daily basis already, by providing invaluable care for those who need it at home.
“By maintaining their health at home, we’re helping keep them safe. We’re ensuring they take their prescribed medication and we’re caring for their physical and emotional well-being every day. All this helps prevent adding additional pressure on the NHS and its resources, which we know will be under considerable strain in the coming months.”
