‘Gorks’ set to tackle three peaks!

22/05/2025 @ 10:01

A group of eight local men are set to tackle the Welsh three peaks next week to raise money for new facilities at the town’s junior football pitches.

Labelling themselves affectionately as “The Gorks”, the octet will hope to reach the three tallest points in Wales - Pen-y-Fan, Cadair Idris and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) – within a 24-hour period next Wednesday.

They hope to raise plenty of money towards the cost of erecting new toilet facilities at the Wayne Evans Playing Fields which are used to train, play competitive matches and run Welshpool Town Juniors from under 5s teams right through to U16s.

The eight taking part are Chris Roberts, Dewi Owen, Llyr Thomas, Dave Williams, Jez Poole, David Williams, Matt Owen and Paul Alexander. Alan Williams has volunteered to drive the mini-bus.

The Welsh Three Peaks includes a total walking distance of 17 miles (27.4km) and an ascent of 2334 metres (7657ft). They will be leaving Welshpool at 4am, and hoping to scale the three peaks by 10pm the same day.

What’s a gork?

While the official term for a ‘gork’ is ‘a patient whose brain has suffered severe and irreversible damage and whose vital functions are being maintained by artificial means’… in Welshpool it can be used as a fun term for a friend or someone you know, as reference to being a fool.
