Confirmed! Guilsfield road to reopen “by end of week”

There’s some good news and some not so good news following confirmation this lunch time that the Welshpool-Guilsfield A490 road won’t be closed all the way to December 12.

The good news is that following our update this morning, water firm Hafren Dyfrdwy has confirmed that we can expect the road closure to end from Thursday.

However, the not so good news is that there will be two sets of traffic lights in place which will still delay motorists drive-time to and from Welshpool.

But it will still be welcomed by road users who were told to officially use a 26-mile diversion via Llanfair Caereinion, although many were clogging up the narrow lanes with one becoming blocked this morning when a lorry broke down.

The full statement from Hafren Dyfrdwy reads: “Our teams have been working hard on the A490 and accelerated their progress, focussing on all the improvements that needed to be done under the safety of a road closure first.

“Thanks to this progress, and following discussions with the local council, we will be reopening the road and completing the remainder of our works with two-way traffic lights.

“To keep everyone safe there will be the need of two sets of lights, one at the north section and one at the south section and road closure will be fully removed from November 6 (Thursday).

“We understand that works like these and road closures are an inconvenience, and we want to thank everyone for their patience while the road closure has been in place and as our work continues.”

Montgomeryshire Assembly Member Russell George has been lobbying hard with Hafren Dyfrdwy to re-open the road as soon as possible and this morning he too was told that it “should be able to largely re-open it by the end of this week”.

“Severn Trent (Hafren Dyfrdwy) have responded to me that they will now bring in additional resources and have managed to reduce the amount of time of the scheduled road closure. The A490 should be largely re-open by the end of this week. There will still be two-way traffic lights in place, but this is a much better outcome that a complete road closure.”
