“Issues” stall school entrance completion

Created on 26/07/2021 @ 22:03

Powys County Council has admitted that “issues with the previous contractors” have resulted in the entrance to Welshpool’s new primary school on Salop Road being left in a sorry state.

The £11.5million school has been warmly received by teachers and learners alike, but was beset by problems throughout its construction with the initial contractors, Dawnus, going out of business and the half finished school being put back out to tender.

It was eventually completed and pupils were able to start there earlier this year, but the entrance has been left in an almighty state.

“Due to a couple of issues with the previous contractors, there are a number of small outstanding areas of work regarding a planning condition the road junction the new Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School, which have caused a delay in finishing this project,” said a spokesperson at Powys County Council.

“However, we are working to get these resolved ASAP with the intention of everything being completed and tidied up before the start of the new academic year in September.”

A second Welshpool primary school for Welsh speakers on the old Maesydre site is set to start construction this summer after several issues delayed its progress.
