Welshpool will celebrate 80 years since D-Day

Welshpool Town Council wants to work with the area’s relevant organisations to ensure that the 80th anniversary of D-Day is celebrated in style next year.

June 6, 2024 will mark 80 years since Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed.

In 1944, Operation Overlord saw over 5,000 ships and landing craft set down more than 130,000 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.

At last night’s Town Council Events and Tourism Committee, it was agreed that Welshpool should mark the occasion with the Town Clerk, Anne Wilson, asked to pull together relevant parties.

“I would think that it is probably something that the 1940s Weekend Committee will be all over as well, so we need to ensure that we are not pulling in different ways and working in conjunction with them,” said Cllr Nick Howells, The Town Mayor.

Cllr Phil Pritchard also added that the British Legion should be included so “we know who is doing what and whenever”.

Welshpool has always marked major anniversaries from WWI and II, with the Beacon on top of Red Bank normally included.
