An electric car has been revealed as the source of ablaze that spread to a nearby factory unit, but was extinguished by fire services before it could take a grip.

Fire crews from Welshpool, Montgomery, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanfyllin and Newtown fire stations were joined by an Oswestry water carrier and Shrewsbury’s aerial ladder platform following the report of a fire on the Buttington Cross Industrial estate at around 1.09am on Saturday morning.

“The fire had spread to a nearby commercial property, measuring approximately 10 metres by 10 metres,” said a spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue.

“Crews utilised one vehicle fire blanket, four breathing apparatus sets, one main jet, two hose reel jets and established a water shuttle system to extinguish the fire.

“The vehicle was severely damaged by fire and heat damage was caused to the commercial property. Crews left the scene at 3.16am.

A spokesperson for the Shropshire Fire Service added: “Oswestry water carrier was at a building fire in Welshpool with Mid and West Wales FRS, where an electric car fire had spread to the side of a neighbouring factory.

“Shrewsbury’s Aerial Ladder Platform also joined the incident to assist with checking the roof space for hot spots.”
