Steph and Billy’s new venture is just the job!

In the latest of our Business in Focus features, we meet the two people behind Mid Wales Recruitment – a new company with two well-known local faces behind it looking to support local businesses with their recruitment needs.

Who is behind Mid Wales Recruitment?

Mid Wales Recruitment is led by Directors Steph Windsor and Billy Spencer, who bring over a decade of combined experience in the recruitment industry. With a strong background in connecting top talent with leading employers.

Why did you feel there was space in the market for a new company?

We saw a clear gap in the market - there was no recruitment agency based in Welshpool. We wanted to change that by creating a local service that’s easily accessible to both candidates and clients. Our goal is to offer a friendly, approachable, and professional recruitment experience right at the heart of the community, in the gateway of Mid Wales.

Have you opened an office for the company, and if so, where?

Yes, we’ve opened our office opposite Coed-y-Dinas, based at Border Garage in Welshpool. We’ve fully refurbished the space to create a welcoming and easily accessible environment where we can meet with clients and interview candidates in person.

We chose this location for its convenience - it’s on a main bus route, just a short walk from town along the canal, and easily accessible from the train station. We wanted somewhere that felt professional yet approachable, and this spot was the perfect fit.

What are your plans moving forward?

Our main goal is to support local businesses with their recruitment needs by making the process easier, faster, and more effective. We understand how time-consuming and challenging hiring can be, and we’re here to take that pressure off.

We aim to become the leading recruitment company in the area - and the only one based in Welshpool. Our focus is on building strong, long-lasting relationships with local employers. We’ve already received fantastic support from businesses we’ve worked with in the past, and we’re excited to continue growing those partnerships while welcoming new ones.

How challenging is the recruitment market at the moment?

Like many industries right now, the recruitment market has its ups and downs. It can be unpredictable at times, but with the right experience, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to building genuine connections, it becomes much more manageable. At Mid Wales Recruitment, we know what to look for and we’re willing to put in the time and effort it takes to find the right fit. When you understand the market and truly care about getting it right - for both clients and candidates - it makes all the difference.

What advice do you have for local companies looking to recruit?

Don’t let past bad experiences put you off. Recruitment doesn’t have to be difficult or impersonal - we’re here to change that. At Mid Wales Recruitment, we tailor our approach to suit each business’s individual needs. We welcome questions, offer honest advice, and work closely with you to understand exactly what you’re looking for.

One of our key strengths is conducting face-to-face interviews and thorough candidate screenings before putting anyone forward. This helps us ensure a better fit right from the start.

We’re always happy to visit your business or invite you to our office for a chat. Whether you want to pop in for an informal conversation or arrange a meeting, we’re here and ready to support you.

What sets your company apart from the competition?

The key difference is that this is our company - we’re not just working for another agency. We’re personally invested in making Mid Wales Recruitment a success, and that drive extends to helping other businesses succeed too.

We genuinely care about what we do, and that passion shows in the way we work. Recruitment doesn’t have to be stressful or complicated—we aim to make it easy, efficient, and even enjoyable. When we find the right talent for a business, everyone benefits. Our clients grow, candidates thrive, and we build strong partnerships that last.

Success for us means success for the businesses we work with.

Has Brexit and recent immigration changes made it harder for local companies to recruit?

Yes, Brexit and the changes to immigration rules have created challenges for many local businesses, especially those that relied on overseas workers. Filling certain roles has become tougher, which can slow down recruitment and impact operations.

However, because we know what we’re doing and understand the local market inside out, we’re able to navigate these challenges smoothly. Our expertise allows us to find the right candidates efficiently and make the process easier for our clients, even in a tougher recruitment environment.
