The family of a young motorcyclist who tragically died last year have been told that the man charged with causing his death has died suddenly.

Alex Edwards was just 22 when he died on the Llandrinio straight after his motorbike was in a collision with a Vauxhall van driven by Barry Phillips, 53, from Four Crosses.

He was charged with causing Alex’s death by dangerous driving and the case was due to be heard today at Welshpool Magistrates for the first time.

But, yesterday, Alex’s family were told that it would not be going ahead due to the sudden death of Mr Phillips.

The case was adjourned at court this morning for two weeks so formal notification of the death can be confirmed.

Alex was a hugely popular young man from Guilsfield who was an apprentice engineer at Technocover Ltd in Welshpool.

He was riding to work on his black Kawasaki motorbike when the collision with Mr Phillips’ van happened at around 7.20am on September 16, 2024.

There was an outpouring of tributes with the family stating at the time: “Alex will be missed beyond words by those who loved him so dearly, especially his mum Bryony, dad Steve, his sister Katherine, his girlfriend Macy, his family and friends.”
