Skatepark debate is back, but behind closed doors!

Secrecy shrouds the latest news surrounding a potential new skatepark for Welshpool.

At last night’s Town Council Operations & Development Committee meeting, chair Phil Pritchard asked for an update on the situation which had appeared to have died a death this summer.

But Town Clerk, Richard Williams, explained that “things are progressing” and added: “In June, I think it was, the committee decided to pause the project because of the lack of funds, and work, instead, with partners to deliver some sort of a provision which we have been doing. There will be an update in confidential session later.”

That session was held with the exclusion of the press and public so we will have to wait for the draft minutes to be published in order to gain any indication of progress.

The skatepark was closed down suddenly during the Covid crisis five years ago due to health and safety concerns and despite the Town Council pledging to make it a priority to replace, it has been beset by delays and budget problems.

Specialist company, Canvas, designed a new skate park, but the company is also believed to have said it will cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to build, money that the council does not have.
