Welshpool Town Council is to consider installing CCTV to deter vandals from striking at a forlorn historical site close to the town centre.
The Motte & Bailey has become a financial and time-consuming thorn in the council’s side, with the local authority responsible for its upkeep despite it being deserted and a health and safety nightmare.
The area belongs to Powis Estates, but 14 years back the Town Council took on responsibility for the site in a long-lease after receiving a grant to convert it into a tourist attraction.
But it failed to take off and has gradually fallen into a state of disrepair with a major refurbishment required to return it to its former state, as is required before it is handed back to Powis Estates in a few years.
Following a spate of vandalism earlier this year (pictured), the Town Council made the decision to fence it off, but the vandals have returned.
Minutes from a meeting last week show: “The Motte & Bailey has had another spate of vandalism, however doors are now screwed shut along with clips on fencing padlocked and bolted. A suggestion was raised re: CCTV in this area and this is to be looked into.”
The site was in the news last year when a biker group wanted to take it on as a mental health and wellness centre, with a promise to carry out any work required. It was also claimed by council officials that it had become a "drugs den".
But it faced opposition from some councillors, causing a delay and prompting the Welsh Bikers for Suicide Prevention to open up in Newtown instead.
