2029 will mark 750th anniversary of Newtown's market

Preparations are beginning for one of Newtown’s largest celebrations as the town looks ahead to the 750th anniversary of its Market Charter in 2029.

At its meeting on Monday night, Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council is expected to appoint a lead councillor to head up a project marking the historic occasion.

King Edward I granted Newtown its Market Charter in 1279, officially establishing it as a market town. The anniversary will mark 750 years since the market was founded and the start of the town’s growth as a centre of trade and community life in Mid Wales.

Councillors will discuss how to begin planning a series of events and initiatives to celebrate the anniversary. The appointment of a lead councillor is seen as the first step in coordinating ideas and partnerships across the town.

The council is expected to work with local organisations, businesses, schools, and heritage groups in the coming years to shape how the anniversary will be marked.
