Young people offered chance to become fire cadets

Teenagers in the Newtown area are being encouraged to sign up for the latest intake of Fire Cadets at Newtown Fire Station.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has launched its recruitment drive for young people aged 13 to 16 who want to learn more about the fire service's work while developing new skills and confidence.

The scheme, which has been running for several years in communities across Wales, offers weekly training sessions led by experienced firefighters and youth officers. Participants take part in practical drills, learn about fire safety and prevention, and work together on challenges designed to test teamwork and communication.

A spokesperson for the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the initiative aims to support young people at a crucial stage in their lives.
“The Fire Cadets programme enables young people to develop their skills and knowledge of the Fire and Rescue Service. Cadets will also get the opportunity to learn important life skills which will inspire positive life choices for their future,” they said.

Youth workers have credited the programme with helping participants improve resilience, leadership, and decision-making. As well as an introduction to the emergency services, the programme has been credited with helping former cadets join the fire service as adults or to volunteer in their local communities.

The Newtown recruitment push comes as fire services and other public-sector organisations across Wales continue to encourage more young people to explore careers in emergency response, especially in rural areas.

Anyone interested in joining the Newtown Fire Cadets, or those who know someone who may be suitable, can find further details and application information on the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service here: www.mawwfire.gov.uk/eng/children-young-people/fire-cadets/
