Election ‘hustings’ could return to Town Hall

Welshpool Town Council is set to invite the candidates running for the May Welsh Government elections to take part in a hustings at the Town Hall.

Hustings are when the candidates can present themselves before the electorate who have the opportunity to ask questions. They have proved popular in the past and there has been a call for them to happen again in the town.

“It is something that you have done previously on many occasions for General Elections and I think it is important for local democracy that you engage with this,” said Town Clerk, Richard Williams.

“This election is important for lots of things because the electoral system is changing and we are part of a new constituency that stretches from the Llyn Peninsula to the border just down the road. It is the biggest in Wales, so I would urge you to hold hustings in the Town Hall.”

Councillors agreed to take the idea forward with the Events Committee to take the lead.

The Welsh Government elections will take place on May 7, to elect 96 members to the Senedd.

It will be the seventh devolved general election since the Senedd (formerly the National Assembly for Wales) was established in 1999.

It will also be the first election following reforms to the voting system, which increase the size of the Senedd from 60 members to 96, adopt a party-list voting system, reduce the number of constituencies to 16 and shorten its term from five years to four.
