The Welshpool Town Council chamber fell silent for a minute on Wednesday night after the Mayor announced the sad news that former Deputy Mayor, Hazel Evans, had passed away.
The much-loved former councillor was first elected to the Town Council in 2008, becoming Deputy Mayor in 2017, before retiring in October 2024.
The Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, opened Wednesday night’s full council meeting by saying: “It is with great sadness that a friend to all of us, Hazel Evans, has sadly passed away.
“Her long service to the council and the excellent work which she has done over the years deserves a mark of our respect, so I suggest we have a minute’s silence while we remember Cllr Hazel Evans.”
Former Mayor, Cllr Nick Howells, requested that the council issues a formal public appreciation for Cllr Evans in the coming days.
On announcing her retirement in 2024, Cllr Evans said: “I became a councillor because I wanted to help the town and people.”
