Table topping Welshpool clubs win again

02/09/2020 @ 10:32

Welshpool's first and second teams are sitting pretty on top of their respective divisions following another impressive day.

Lance Parkes (85) and Paul Chapman (44) were in form as Welshpool continued their superb run in the Wales & West Group against Newtown II.

The pair guided the hosts through to 189-5, before Newtown's reply finished well short on 148-5.

Llanidloes continued their winning run at Guilsfield & Llandrinio, setting their hosts a target of 152-5 to chase. Geraint Evans made 54 for the visitors.

In reply, David Williams made 46 and Allan Harris added a quick-fire 30 but it wasn’t enough as Harry Turner claimed 3-12 to reduce Guilsfield to 117 all out.

Montgomery II were beaten in a low scoring game against Bishop’s Castle who set a target of just 84 to chase. David Jones (4-9) and William Kinsey (3-18) did their bit for the hosts, but the batsmen found runs hard to come by once again and were bowled out for just 63.

Welshpool II returned from Knockin & Kinnerley II with an outstanding 138-run win in the Border League thanks largely to Callum Preston’s 111.

Preston’s century included seven sixes as he blitzed the home attack in 77 balls. Opener Mat Sherwood added 68 as Welshpool notched up a mighty 228-4.

Pieter Van Jaarsveld then took 4-8 and Harry Bowen took 3-11 to restrict the hosts to 90 all out.

The result makes it six wins from six for Welshpool II who copy their first team in topping their division.

Dave Anthony took 6-32 as Newtown continued their incredible summer in the John Rees Division One against Knockin & Kinnerley.

Newtown were protecting a target of 155 from 40 overs, with Ricky Davies (33) top scoring, when Anthony tore through the visitors’ batting to make it six wins from six for the table topping hosts.

Montgomery edged a thriller to boost their standing in the Shrewsbury & West Division 2 after setting Cound 131 to chase. Tim Davies top scored from mid-order with 34.

Aaron Ruff-Cock led the bowling attack, taking 3-8, as Cound’s response fell three runs short on 128-9 from their 40 overs.
